Promoting positivity through utter negativity? Come on, it is becoming a regular thing for us... "Pro-Mia," in particular, has a totally positive outlook. There was a respectable, but not amazing, turnout for the first night of the benefit. Former Buddy-heads and enthusiastic BLOODYMINDED front-liners Rotten Milk vs Bubblegum Shitface kicked off the night with a barrage of fun, loud, harsh, junk-noise and Mad Dog 20/20 abuse. They blasted through their fast set and were coaxed into an extra piece before quickly clearing the floor for us. We got off to a strong start, and began motoring through our set, helped, in part, by the clear, loud PA system chugging away behind us. It was not until I blanked out on "Pro-Ana" that things had a moment to breath. How the fuck did that one get away from me? We first did that song live in October 2002, well before "Gift Givers" was really even conceived. Although Ed could not help me with the opening line, he managed to picked the pace up with a fast, hard version of "Pro-Mia." The Napalm Death song, "You Suffer," was dedicated to all of the hurricane victims. It seemed like a good choice for a cover version after going with Isidro to see N.D. play with Obituary earlier in the week. I think our version lasted two-seconds... a bit long! We wrapped things up after a bit more than 21-minutes (surprisingly... I thought for sure that we made it under 20), handing the stage over to Behold! The Living Corpse. This time, a drummer-less B!TLC started with a long keyboard and theremin intro, before the bassist and the guitarists joined the maelstrom of churning, repetitive psych-metal-noise. After a long, shifting movement, the band dissolved, much in the same way that they began. It is interesting to see and hear them practically re-invent themselves from show to show, maintaining some essential characteristics as they go. A few of the metal guys in the audience seemed a bit nonplussed by the set, which was amusing, too. Dark Fog wrapped up the night with an enjoyable, solid set of brooding psychedelic songs and lights, which would have been a welcome addition to the Dead Meadow show the other night - far better than the unpleasantly schizophrenic Russian Circles...
