Thanks to Arvo (Mister Fuckhead) for adding us to this show. Thanks to all of our friends for coming out to The Mutiny on a Wednesday night. Thanks to the other bands, and the crowd, for the enthusiasm during our set.

Mister Fuckhead started things off with an interesting sequencer-driven electronic set. Part music performance, part performance art, Arvo sat at the end of the bar closest to the soundboard, in front of his equipment, sipping from a gigantic mug of cranberry juice (and ?), while scraping a disposable razor across his head and executing a rash-inducing dry shave. Ouch. Short, and to the point; that’s the way to do it. After a tortuously long delay involving driving home for I.D. and adjusting equipment, Soft Serve played a long set of drum-kit, guitar, backing tracks, processed vocals, and live video manipulation. It was not really my thing, but the crowd was into it for a while. I think that I was mostly just annoyed by the wait and the long (by comparison) set. We got going pretty quickly, and after burning through a few songs trying to deal with the less-than-amazing PA and volume, we pretty much pulled it together. The crowd was excellent – lots of groping and grabbing – but more tender than violent this time. Thanks to the guys in KK Rampage for being so involved. Carpet of Sexy were up next. We played with them in February, in Champaign, and it was cool to see them again, as they seem to pop up at a lot of our shows. They somehow manage to combine lo-fi digital hardcore with a touch of power-electronics and just the right amount of chaotic, physical homoeroticism. Loud, noisy, heavy, funny, and, um, sexy, I guess. KK Rampage were last, and I could easily envision a tour featuring them and Carpet of Sexy. The only other time that I have seen them was when they played with White Mice at Texas Ballroom. At that show, they played in the dark, immediately got naked, and opened something like a five-pound bag of flour and threw it all around the room. Total hit and run. For this show, the lights were on, the owner warned them to keep their pants on, which they were generally successful at doing, but not totally. Live drums, some kind of Groove Box rhythm/sequencer type thing, dual jumping around spastic/retarded Dave-id from Virgin Prunes-type vocals, rolling around on the filthy, beer-soaked floor in a further display of chaotic, physical homoeroticism… Total mayhem…Great.
