A great night! This was one of the biggest crowds that we have played to at The Empty Bottle. The audience exceeded 330 people, certainly due mostly to the popularity of Casiotone For the Painfully Alone, as well as the free Monday series that the venue has. Wilt started off the night with a set that very slowly – and very effectively – built up from their more traditional dark ambient soundscapes into a torrent of sludge-rock-influenced heaviness. I’m in the mood. Benny’s Burn Ward set also started with a lighter – yet menacing – death-industrial (?) tone, before quickly shifting into a brutal electronic style that literally caused numerous innocent bystanders to practically jump out of their skin. You’ve gotta’ show skin to win. Pedestrian Deposit was up next, but Jon had technical difficulties. After a deceptively pretty introduction, he pulled the trigger, only to immediately run into some sort of equipment failure. Within seconds, he decided to call it a night, rather than regroup and retry. Fair enough. Unfortunately, there would be no repeat of the intensity that we saw/heard in Providence this past March. Get into the shock pit. The Oscillating Innards set steered the night back on track. This was my third O.I. set of the year, and Gordon once again blasted the room apart with a dynamic set. It’s better that way. We were up next, and I thought that we would do an ultra-short show. The quick 14 song set list seemed like something that we could do in 17 or 18 minutes, easily. After listening to the MiniDisc today, I guess that we were hamming it up with the audience - a lot - as the set stretched to nearly 28 minutes. The sound was really clean and balanced, and regardless of injuries and an unsuspecting crowd (well, 70% of them, probably), we had a blast just going with the flow. It seems that I was even singing at the end of "Hayling"!?! So now comes the time. Casiotone For the Painfully Alone closed out this successful night in grand style. His revealing, personal, lo-fi electro-pop was a great balance to the rest of the performances. And to think, we could be label mates one of these days! Thanks to everyone who came out to support us! Thanks to everyone at The Empty Bottle for their awesome – as always – hospitality and assistance. Thanks to Benny, Gordon, and Jon, for asking us to join in. Thanks to Blake Edwards for getting the ball rolling at the venue. Thanks for reading, and thanks for quoting/referencing these weblog entries in-between songs!
