All in all, Monday's show was excellent. We were competing with an experimental show at The Empty Bottle and a noise-related metal show at The Note (Unearthly Trance and Facedowninshit). We still managed to get a very respectable crowd at Mr. City, and it was Labor Day, to boot. I Am The Liquor started off the night with some abrasive Kill Rock Stars-type of female-fronted punk. Wilt creeped in as a one-piece, with James delivering an under-the-tongue dose of heavy, dark electronics. Panicsville replaced It's A Trap, and they reminded me of the first half of their recent Empty Bottle show - more on the heavy music concrete side. Nice. We knocked out a fairly quick, bad mood performance, and then the collaborative set took off pretty much right away. More like what I expected Vegas Martyrs to sound like live, a couple of months ago, the crowd was annihilated by an amazing set that combined ritualistic black metal, power-electronics, and maybe even psychedelia. This was one of my favorite "heavy music" sets in ages! The activity moved on to El Taconazo, with a big crowd, and then to the newly remodled Blue Light. Thanks to everyone at Mr. City, including Seth, Jeremy, Alex, and Carrie, for hosting the show. Thanks to Marlene, for videotaping, and for putting up with another show on our anniversary. Thanks to Dominick, Richard, Matt, and Robert, for making Chicago one of their stops. Thanks to all of the other performers. Thanks to everyone who came out to support the show.
