Thanks to Mr. Fuckhead, for inviting us to play and for being a great host. Thanks to Betty Devoe, for being such a lovely hostess. Thanks to Bryan Tholl, for manning Isidro’s video camera. Thanks to everyone who came out to support us that night. Bryan’s set as Is started off the basement festivities at this rather interesting event. He worked some completely insane frequencies that ricocheted off of the brick walls and pretty much turned my ears into mush. Our set got going with good crowd energy and an enthusiastic response. Much like at Halloween, we had a few sound bugs to iron out, particularly as calls for “Louder!” were met and we overloaded the mixer a bit. I got into a bit of a tussle with an unhappy audience member but it did not stop me from finishing “Shock Pit,” appropriately, down on the concrete floor of a basement! Don’t rule out more of these all-Intrinsic Action sets from happening in the future, as I really like hearing those old synth patterns over a loud PA. I only caught the start of Black Bear Combo, but I watched intently as Right-Eye Rita started her set, which climaxed with an unusual, date-appropriate ritual led by Mr. Fuckhead. I will look forward to more of Rita’s performances as she has an intense voice!

Happy birthday to Nicole from Rococo Records! We were really happy to be asked to be a part of this celebration - and of course, to be a part of this line-up. Thanks to Joe, Russ, and Tom, for pulling off such a great show. Thanks to the always-hospitable folks at the Empty Bottle, for making everything run so smoothly. Thanks to everyone who showed up. Thanks to Marlene, for videotaping.

Yeah, so we arrived with the full Chicago five-piece line-up, only to be outdone by B!TLC, who evolved into a six-piece progressive-psychedelic-stew, earth-moving machine for the night. Mighty! We did our floor-show thing, cranking along for a bit over 24 minutes, although it seemed longer to me (?). The recording came out really well. Working the speakers in front of the stage really suits us there... although the metal grills on the subwoofers sort of did a cheese-grater thing above my left eye. What I thought was a scratch, at first, clearly was a deeper cut, and my eye clouded over as the blood ran into it. It would have had a great dramatic effect had we not only been (dramatically) back lit with yellow lights. It clotted up well-enough that I did not need stitches, although it opened up again late last night... Spykes (A.K.A. Mr. John Olson) started pretty much right away after us, and he proceeded to completely shatter me with a primal-sounding, gritty analog assault that was devastatingly heavy and loud. Fans of classic M.B. and Mauthausen Orchestra-era (and other Broken Flag type) stuff would be strongly advised to take notice. Really mental stuff with some of the most piercing frequencies ever. Nuthin' heavier! John Wiese followed up that atomic blast with an equally harmful digital apocalypse that clearly destroyed whatever was left of anyone's hearing. Crushing sound with some nice dramatic pauses. It was a totally great night!

Isidro and I headed over to El Presidente to relax a bit, and a big crew of birthday revelers followed a bit later. People are clearly divided on that spot. Maybe you need to know what to get there. Maybe Isidro and I get preferential treatment. I will tell you that we got two salsas that do not normally come out to the table there. One of the best green sauces, ever. My pozole totally hit the spot.
