Thanks to Jason at Enemy, for pulling this great night together. Thanks to Marlene and Jessica, for videotaping. Huge thanks to the out-of-towners who drove to Chicago for this show: Shane from Milwaukee, and Grey, Charlie, and Redrot Ryan, from Detroit. Thanks to all of our local friends who supported us…Misfits Robbie rules in the video!

The black-wigged DJ kicked things off for the night… I think that (s)he was either a stereotypical goth chick, or maybe (s)he was dressed up as Andy from Panicsville, circa our first show together from 2001, with Slogun and Vertonen… still figuring that one out. Great tracks from Joy Division, Black Flag, etc. Death Factory was next, and Mike veered from bent guitar sounds into strong, old-school industrial synth-driven dirge. Magic Missile kept the guitar/synth combo thing going with their great, dynamic set. Jason’s wig was pretty gross and a touch Cobain-esque. Did I mention that wigs creep me out? Sseepage brought a strong punk attitude to their blasting set of rapid-fire songs. The goth girl was belting out masculine vocals that got a bit too buried in the mix, unfortunately. Next, we brought out a set of Intrinsic Action’s greatest “hits,” that went off pretty much without a hitch. The vocals could have been a bit more prominent, but it was clear that the people who were there for I.A. knew what I was saying. It was really great to hear those keyboards churning out some familiar, pulsing, minimal synth lines in a live setting like that – Chris and Ed were totally on their marks with the original patterns. Finally, Lozenge played a massive set, which veered from something reminiscent of the very first Swans EP, to early Swans with James Chance on vocals, to more “out” no wave stuff.

Vote for Rachel P. for president. We stragglers know at least two semi-compelling reasons why. Shout out to the penguin guy, too. Upon leaving the show, we drove through crowds of costumed revelers, including a group of seemingly non-costumed people who offered us the most chilling part of the night that Grey will have to explain to Dominick. It was a total slow-motion cinematic scene, as far as my tired recall goes today. Our extended crew moved on to a fairly lame loft party, then made our way north to grab slingers at the Diner Grill. A spoonful of chili was dropped to the floor in honor of John’s absence (welcome home!). I will not include the name of the person who did not finish their slinger. We know it was not Grey, as he is a veggie. Back to the lame loft party which was, in fact, very well stocked, and which was actually picking up speed – at like, 7:00 AM. A few hours of sleep, and then it was on to the Garfield Park conservatory, where we discovered that two creepy little albino monsters live in one of the indoor ponds. Traps were laid, as the proximity concerns me.
Happy Birthday to Ryan!
