Here are quick run-downs on the last two nights. Major thanks to 16 Bitch Pile Up for asking us out on a two-night date. The hand reaching into the little case of electronics (or something???) routine is really, really creepy, and the well-known knife-play is never disappointing, either! It was a great two nights. We adore you girls and we wish you a great tour - and a smooth transition into the Bay Area.

Thanks to Nick for getting this show put together, and to his friends and crew for all of their hard work. Another Champaign-Urbana show, another liberal church, or church-like setting. Thanks to Eamon, as always, for the great support. No thanks to Alex/Climax Denial, for canceling out on us! Thanks to James and Dan from Wilt, particularly for kindly asking me to add vocals to “Black Earth.”

Nick started the night off with an awesomely effete Silvum set. His interplay with the audience is certainly in keeping with much of his attitude. “Did I do that?” Excellent! Wilt was up next, and they kicked up an even nastier dirge then they did back at the end of July. They are working out some dark demons in these recent live shows. I hope to have them up in Chicago soon. We were up next, and we tried to bring it fast and hard. The previous night’s painful scrum might have hampered things a bit, but even without the passionate physical contact, it seemed to go pretty well. The sound was much cleaner, yet still pretty loud, even if a few electro-ghosts were still haunting our wiring, or something. Sixes was next, and Ryan brought out a piercingly loud, pulsing set, which was a bit reminiscent of Aaron Dilloway’s recent Chicago show, or maybe a bit Mammal-esque, too. A strong variant of the previous night’s set. 16BPU laid down a large Duct Tape pentagram over the karmic yin and yang floor mural (is it still a mural if it is on a floor?), signaling a very dark turn of events for the night. Set up on four of the points, all facing inwards, powered by their own very loud amps, they built up their sound very slowly again. Things got very intense. Nick and I ended up sitting in the center of the pentagram. The women did some ultra-noisy spell casting, and they proceeded to totally destroy, leaving a faint demonic mark on Urbana’s hallowed ground.

A great night, even if we missed out on the frightening sounding “karma free Krishna meals.”

Thanks to Blake for getting the ball rolling on this one. Thanks to Tony and Rob at The Empty Bottle for taking good care of us, as always, there. Thanks to all of the groups that we played with. Thanks to Marlene and Jessica for videotaping. Thanks to our friends for the support, especially those who had already been through a two-hour Molotov show at the House of Blues.

Gays in the Military kicked off the night with a vulgar display of power. They dished out sleazy hard rock, sleazy dancers, sleazy roller-girls, a sleazy porn-fairy, and other sleazy stuff. A hard act to follow… but Panicsville accepted the task as a two-piece unit (Andy and Jeremy) with real hard rock… or rocks, or were they cement fragments, adding to the noise? Another stately show from them as we march towards the countdown towards a Panicsville-less Chicago. We were up next, and we did our thing, that is, if our thing was rugby… and if I was a rugby ball. There was a lot of groping and humping as I recall. I learned that the human knee is meant to only bend in a back-to-front manner, not side to side. At one point, we got so loud that I thought a harsh-noise band had started playing… maybe Merzbow was back (or still on?). Our vocals were swallowed by feedback and harshness for a while, until we regained control of things – oddly, by turning ourselves down a bit – surely a first! Then the pain set in. Vertonen was next, and Blake had set up by the soundboard, shifting the audience’s direction to another part of the room. Although he did not attempt a Lightning Bolt move and start right after we finished, he brought a wallop, indeed. His sets have been quite varied throughout this year, but consistently strong, confidant, and totally engaging. Sixes were (was?) up next. Ryan quickly went hard at destroying what was left of people’s hearing. Solid, sharp, and to-the-point. That left the night to a four-piece 16 Bitch Pile Up, who started with a long, slow build-up of creepy, threatening atmospheres, before they kicked things up several notches and went in for the kill. Just before everyone actually died their little death, the ladies “pulled out” and left the crowd shuddering for more. And they did not deliver. What the fuck?!? Well, I had the next night to collect…
