The FX television show, "The
Shield," has kept me glued to
my screen for the last several
Tuesday nights. Last night's
closing sequence was amazing,

"True Crime" is the second full-length release by
Chicago's BLOODYMINDED. Initiated in 1997,
when the band resided in Brooklyn, New York,
the recordings were completed over several
sessions in both New York and Chicago. Far
richer in sound than "Trophy," the group's debut
compact disc, the fuller, longer tracks are
distinguished by multiple layers of analog
synthesizer, sub-bass frequencies, and gutteral,
screamed, and spoken vocals; performed by
two different band line-ups, over a three year
period. "True Crime" is also unique in its list
of guest performers, including Toulouse,
France's Xavier Laradji, of "Timeless"
magazine; Milan, Italy's Paolo Bandera, of
Sshe Retina Stimulants and Sigillum S, and
Andrea Chiaravalli, of Iugula-Thor; Kyoto,
Japan's Akifumi Nakajima, of Aube and the
G.R.O.S.S. label; Jonathan Canady of
Deathpile and Dead World; and John
Balistreri of Slogun. "True Crime" marks
the vocal debut of Ed Knigge, an integral
member of the band since 1997, and the

- A long silence...
and
- A curious development
on the Intrinsic Action front:

This may possibly be a simple
case of absent-mindedness,
but the date of the band's
inception is under review.
Stated in interviews and on
printed material as beginning
in 1985, a recent session of
unpacking sheds new light
on things.
-Previous to the release of
the band's first self-titled,
sixty minute cassette in
1985, a tape was made by
the two original members,
Mark Solotroff, and Frank
Wolff, who appeared on the
first release, but was not a
part of the band by the time
of the first live show in 1986.
-The tape, which was recorded
in 1984, shows the influence
of such early industrial bands
as S.P.K. and Einsturzende
Neubauten; at the time, we
did not have any synthesizers,
and we made the recordings
with echoing, metallic percussion,
along with a great deal of
rather primal screaming. In a
sense, it crosses over between
the sounds and attitudes of the
type of industrial music that was
popular at the time, and the
style of power-electronics that
Intrinsic Action developed into.
The tape has a xeroxed cover
with artwork and a rudimentary
band logo, but it is doubtful that
it was ever duplicated beyond
copies for the two band members.

-We went to hear Gilles spin
on Monday night at Double
Happiness, deep under the
sidewalk at 173 Mott Street,
near Spring. This would
be a highly recommended
night, too.

I just received the new Sshe Retina
Stimulants compact disc, "Central
Node Recording" (Nihil Market) from
Paolo Bandera. The recordings are
really rich sounding, and they are
full of depth. SRS once again delivers
a recording that is distinguished by
frequencies, both high and low, that
blast out of the speakers, while at the
same time, feel as if they are a part of a
cohesive composition. I am looking
forward to delving into this disc much
further.

On a mostly unrelated note, I have
been playing the recent Warlocks
compact disc, "Rise and Fall" (Bomp)
rather ceaselessly. The Velvet
Underground and Spacemen 3
references are entirely justified, but
reviews seem to miss the narcotic
Rolling Stones influence that runs
through many of the songs.
