Thanks to Arvo (Mister Fuckhead) for adding us to this show. Thanks to all of our friends for coming out to The Mutiny on a Wednesday night. Thanks to the other bands, and the crowd, for the enthusiasm during our set.
Mister Fuckhead started things off with an interesting sequencer-driven electronic set. Part music performance, part performance art, Arvo sat at the end of the bar closest to the soundboard, in front of his equipment, sipping from a gigantic mug of cranberry juice (and ?), while scraping a disposable razor across his head and executing a rash-inducing dry shave. Ouch. Short, and to the point; that’s the way to do it. After a tortuously long delay involving driving home for I.D. and adjusting equipment, Soft Serve played a long set of drum-kit, guitar, backing tracks, processed vocals, and live video manipulation. It was not really my thing, but the crowd was into it for a while. I think that I was mostly just annoyed by the wait and the long (by comparison) set. We got going pretty quickly, and after burning through a few songs trying to deal with the less-than-amazing PA and volume, we pretty much pulled it together. The crowd was excellent – lots of groping and grabbing – but more tender than violent this time. Thanks to the guys in KK Rampage for being so involved. Carpet of Sexy were up next. We played with them in February, in Champaign, and it was cool to see them again, as they seem to pop up at a lot of our shows. They somehow manage to combine lo-fi digital hardcore with a touch of power-electronics and just the right amount of chaotic, physical homoeroticism. Loud, noisy, heavy, funny, and, um, sexy, I guess. KK Rampage were last, and I could easily envision a tour featuring them and Carpet of Sexy. The only other time that I have seen them was when they played with White Mice at Texas Ballroom. At that show, they played in the dark, immediately got naked, and opened something like a five-pound bag of flour and threw it all around the room. Total hit and run. For this show, the lights were on, the owner warned them to keep their pants on, which they were generally successful at doing, but not totally. Live drums, some kind of Groove Box rhythm/sequencer type thing, dual jumping around spastic/retarded Dave-id from Virgin Prunes-type vocals, rolling around on the filthy, beer-soaked floor in a further display of chaotic, physical homoeroticism… Total mayhem…Great.

Thanks to Jason at Enemy, for pulling this great night together. Thanks to Marlene and Jessica, for videotaping. Huge thanks to the out-of-towners who drove to Chicago for this show: Shane from Milwaukee, and Grey, Charlie, and Redrot Ryan, from Detroit. Thanks to all of our local friends who supported us…Misfits Robbie rules in the video!
The black-wigged DJ kicked things off for the night… I think that (s)he was either a stereotypical goth chick, or maybe (s)he was dressed up as Andy from Panicsville, circa our first show together from 2001, with Slogun and Vertonen… still figuring that one out. Great tracks from Joy Division, Black Flag, etc. Death Factory was next, and Mike veered from bent guitar sounds into strong, old-school industrial synth-driven dirge. Magic Missile kept the guitar/synth combo thing going with their great, dynamic set. Jason’s wig was pretty gross and a touch Cobain-esque. Did I mention that wigs creep me out? Sseepage brought a strong punk attitude to their blasting set of rapid-fire songs. The goth girl was belting out masculine vocals that got a bit too buried in the mix, unfortunately. Next, we brought out a set of Intrinsic Action’s greatest “hits,” that went off pretty much without a hitch. The vocals could have been a bit more prominent, but it was clear that the people who were there for I.A. knew what I was saying. It was really great to hear those keyboards churning out some familiar, pulsing, minimal synth lines in a live setting like that – Chris and Ed were totally on their marks with the original patterns. Finally, Lozenge played a massive set, which veered from something reminiscent of the very first Swans EP, to early Swans with James Chance on vocals, to more “out” no wave stuff.
Vote for Rachel P. for president. We stragglers know at least two semi-compelling reasons why. Shout out to the penguin guy, too. Upon leaving the show, we drove through crowds of costumed revelers, including a group of seemingly non-costumed people who offered us the most chilling part of the night that Grey will have to explain to Dominick. It was a total slow-motion cinematic scene, as far as my tired recall goes today. Our extended crew moved on to a fairly lame loft party, then made our way north to grab slingers at the Diner Grill. A spoonful of chili was dropped to the floor in honor of John’s absence (welcome home!). I will not include the name of the person who did not finish their slinger. We know it was not Grey, as he is a veggie. Back to the lame loft party which was, in fact, very well stocked, and which was actually picking up speed – at like, 7:00 AM. A few hours of sleep, and then it was on to the Garfield Park conservatory, where we discovered that two creepy little albino monsters live in one of the indoor ponds. Traps were laid, as the proximity concerns me. Happy Birthday to Ryan!
BAD JACK SAID, “I’M NOT AFRAID OF DEATH, BECAUSE DEATH IS A NATURAL THING. I’M MORE AFRAID OF LIFE, BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW WHERE LIFE WILL LEAD ME WITH THIS HEAD OF MINE.”
