Thanks to Seth and everyone at Mr. City for agreeing to host the show. Thanks to everyone who came out to support! It looked grim, at first. Some folks were already down in Saint Louis for the noise fest there. Some people were at Dark Funeral. Other were at High On Fire. And people even came over after the Meneguar show. Busy night. But people kept arriving and it turned out to be a nice crowd.
Anaphylaxis started off the night in a more calm manner, using modular synth, light sensitive home-built gadgets, and other electronic ephemera to great effect. It has been a while since I played with, or saw, Jason and Andrew, so it was nice to have them on board.
Anthony Miller, AKA HZMT, AKA Hazmat, AKA Dirty Tony, etc., was up next. Most off his gear seemed to be made of circuits and Great Stuff - but I wished that I had some foam for my ears, because one of his handmade devices was like an inner ear slicer. Weird electronics and vocals upped the ante for the nigh - we were still only on the back-side PA - and it was already starting to hurt.
I was up next, and I tried to do a very slow build-up. Things got dense fairly quickly, and before I knew it, I had overloaded the PA and knocked the head out of commission. Bummer... but the Suffering Bastard guys had an extra... they roll with over half-a-dozen, at least... so they got me sorted out within about three minutes. After I was back up and running, I just picked up where I had left off. I kept adding to the dense fabric of feedback... kept the vocals more subtle, until everything was maxed out... and then I did heavier vocals into the speaker. Not great, but not the worst. My ears were certainly ringing more. Major thanks to the SxBx guys for getting me back in business!
Here is where things take a turn for the truly painful...
Twodeadsluts Onegoodfuck turned on, and all bets were off. No shit, the most intense power-electronics (I guess that is what they are) that I have seen since Slogun started playing live. Completely ear-piercing feedback and vocals - coming out of the SxBx soundclash PA system - primitive synth pulses/patterns - in your face stage presence. I almost do not want to describe it. Heavy fucking stuff. The real deal. I wish that I could be in the basement of Apop records tonight... damn.
Suffering Bastard capped off the night with the doomiest, crustiest set that I have seen by them, yet - BLOODYMINDED has played with them twice in Providence. Their twin bass sound was such an extreme change from TDS OGF, who seemed to occupy a completely different spectrum of the air. SxBx was more of a bowel-churning gut punch. Best nail spike arm bands in ages, too!
All in all, a great mix of styles... a fun night... good crowd interaction. But my ears feel like they were jabbed with an icepick...

New THE FORTIETH DAY cassette
I have a small number of copies of the new The Fortieth Day cassette for sale. It was just released on Cipher Productions from Australia. Please send an e-mail prior to making a PayPal payment, in order to confirm availability: $7.00 USA/$10.00 World @ postpaid

The Fortieth Day
"Pelusium: 540 AD"
Cipher Productions (Australia)
Cassette (C-62)
"The Fortieth Day have managed to build up a heady wash of particled, crusted tape releases on the BloodLust! label, the project's clogged airways and dusted corridors of sound one of the most perfect fits for the cassette format one could hope to imagine. 'Pelusium: 540 AD' is The Fortieth Day in supreme form, the guitar/bass duo of Isidro Reyes and Mark Solotroff (BLOODYMINDED) churning out an obtrusive cloud of sound but this time with a little more detail glaring through the asthmatic machinations.
Black and white artwork and tape labels all housed in a Norelco case; a slight twist on the classic BloodLust! aesthetic linked to this project. Edition of 100 copies."

Tour Video
Here are some short, dark and grainy video clips, shot on my HP digital still camera. If anyone got any video of my sets (or photographs), please let me know. I kept forgetting to give David my camera. I wish that I had better clips, as well as clips of everyone that we played with, but... Thanks for checking!

White Leather
After a quick and easy drive from our Ann Arbor retreat to Kalamazoo, we were greeted by Joel from the Red Room, who was kind enough to get the pizza factory rolling right away. It seems that Joel and Miles (in NYC for Wolf Eyes and Ramleh) have been beefing up the PA/amp situation in their basement, because we were presented with a wall of opportunities that definitely shaped the outcome of the night, sonically, at least.
Things looked pretty grim, audience-wise, when White Leather got started. This Villa Valley/Haunted Castle offshoot oozed out the perfect sort of basement analog ambience... almost death-industrial in its pulsing near-beats... dark, murky, and rather heavy, especially coming through the aforementioned sound system.
Our hometown friends, Locrian, played the most intense set that I have seen from them, channeling traffic woes and malfunctioning equipment stress into a wall of sound that I have not heard them create in Chicago. Acoustic and electric guitar - keyboard and voice - built up into an ear-punishing tidal wave of sound, that maintained all of the nuance and subtlety that I expect from Andre and Terence.
Happily, I saw that a few more people had arrived at the space, even as some unfortunately had to leave early.
I was up next, and plugged into so many different amps, it was clear that the feedback that I generated was going to have a lot of gradation. I tried to build things up slowly, but even two microphones at lower volume were spewing out vicious waves of sound. At one point, after things had built up to a full level of sound, I turned back to face the audience to do vocals, and I saw literally everyone trying to shield their ears. It looked great from my perspective. Even with this small audience, I got some perceptive and thoughtful "feedback" from people, which was great.
David was up next, and although his sound was not as blown out as it was in Ypsilanti, this was still an extremely forceful Envenomist set. The range of speakers/amps still allowed for David's full sound to come through, even if the three distinctly different synth voices quickly careened off of the wall in front of him. Envenomist is as suited to dark basements as it probably is to large halls, abandoned factories, and movie theaters. Head music that you can feel in your gut. Another amazing set, indeed...
Thanks to Miles, for getting the show sorted out. Thanks to Joel, for keep us fed and for making us LOUD. Thanks to Joy, for her aerobic input. Hi to Pat Yankee. Thanks to those who came out, including those who have been in and out of contact for years!

Report from Michigan
Just a quick recap of last night...
Thursday October 11
Raven Pit
Ypsilanti, MI

Bad Party
Redrot
Crosse Humiliation
This was my first trip to the Raven Pit... which is also the Llama Pit, the Draheim Pit, and the PE Paul Pit. Holy shit... what a house!?! After we got into Ann Arbor, dinner was had at a "by the pound" Indian joint. Brilliant, or not???
Crosse Humiliation - which is New Pledgemaster + Cleanse - started the night off in a brutal way. Somehow, I managed to not realize that they played the Intrinsic Action song, "Male Payment." Whoa! Heavy dual vocal power-electronics from Grey and PE Paul - who, it must be noted, stripped down to his undies during their set (but wait, there is more).
Redrot was up next and Ryan delivered the goods - and then some - in a new style. He had electronic gear - no bass - which freed him up to be more of a front man... which was a very welcome change. He belted out a selection of heavily rhythm-driven new pieces that were amazing. Always a treat!
Bad Party. Yep. A gross cross between White Devil and Tamion 12-Inch. Beats, bass guitar, electronics, and spiteful vocals. Some Suicide throb, some stripped down and ugly minimal techno... some noise rock elements (Big Black, maybe?). They definitely brought the crowd to a good (bad) place before I played...
I played a nice 15-minute set with a great range of frequencies, thanks to Grey setting up a nice rig, and thanks to Mike (Bad Party) for letting me use his bass set-up. Good build-up, solid central section... the inevitable collapse... and the feedback loop fade out.
David beat the pulp out of everyone still standing with the heaviest and loudest Envenomist set, yet. In that basement, with those amps, it was a crusher. Very different... less relaxing... not hypnotic in the same way as usual. Hard stuff.
As an added bonus, some girls talked PE Paul into doing a naked New Pledgemaster set. It was his birthday. He did it. Early Broken Flag/Iphar-style power-electronics - naked - in a basement in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Not nice. Not nice at all. But very good!
Hey, I just had brunch with Leo Dilloway. Rad little guy!!!

Tour Update - October 11
Greetings from Starbucks on the Case-Western Reserve campus in Cleveland, Ohio. We had an excellent show last night. Thanks to Sam Goldberg for getting us all set up.
Pat's In The Flats is a classic dive bar type of spot... in continuous operation for over 60 years... and Pat, herself, was behind the bar all night, seemingly not bothered by the noise swirling around her establishment. She even bought me`a drink at the end of the night.
We had a really great crowd there, with a mix of older (Ralph, thanks!) and newer Cleveland friends. Thanks to Lisa, for bringing the photographs of BLOODYMINDED from our Inside/Outside show from 2006.
Snakebit Beatniks (George of Steam Drapula) started things off with a masterful set of mixer feedback, mainly, I think, which he built up so smoothly, and which he controlled in such a way that it seemed almost melodic at points.
The supergroup trio of Nathan Bowers / David Russell / Wyatt "Howhow" Howland was up next, and they set up in a line, with very disparate instrumentation, almost playing solitary sets, yet completely gelling into a very cohesive, swelling, breathing, improv noise unit.
Catnap (Mark from Emeralds) was up third, and sandwiched between intros and outros of Bill Hick, I believe, Mark layed down some amazing guitar, which started out on the more ambient, mournful side, and which built up to a more aggressive pitch... but I am talking about really well-played guitar... another facet of the emerald... unexpected...
I felt much better about last night's set... things built up really nicely for me. I built up to a strong feedback mix... payed more attention to vocal delivery... let everything sort of collapse... then I slowly faded everything out.
After a quick sound issue snafu, David delivered his fourth primo set of this trip. Like the previous nights, he quickly cast a spell over the crowd and temporarily brought them to some other place.
Thanks to everyone who came out to support!
Off to see some art...
