Mark Solotroff "Today The Infinite, Tomorrow Zero" Announced

Electronic music veteran, artist, multi-instrumentalist/noise mastermind MARK SOLOTROFF will release his latest solo album, Today The Infinite, Tomorrow Zero, on November 3rd.

Today The Infinite, Tomorrow Zero is the follow-up to SOLOTROFF’s 2021-released album, Not Everybody Makes It and features ten songs, each running exactly six-minutes in length. SOLOTROFF characterizes it as a continuation of his voyage through experimental ambient and drone, and it finds him refining concepts that he’s been developing for several years, down to more digestible portions of music.

For this album, SOLOTROFF worked with a variety of vintage analog synths, recorded directly to a four-track cassette deck, which remains his preferred arrangement. At their foundation, each song was built from multiple layers of synth. SOLOTROFF then wove in loops that sometimes sit more prominently and more melodically and that sometimes appear in a more spectral fashion. SOLOTROFF’s own voice adds further dimension to some songs, but he processed it so it became a layer of sound closer in nature to synth patterns or distorted frequencies.

SOLOTROFF created numerous mixes of the ten songs, striving to find a sweet spot where it could be enjoyed through a home stereo with speakers, through a car system, through headphones, and through now ubiquitous earbuds. After discussing approaches with mastering engineer Collin Jordan, SOLOTROFF was extremely pleased with how versatile the master turned out. That said, he admits that the low-end frequencies he embedded in each song remain best experienced through speakers or capable headphones. Of this, he’s unapologetic. It’s an album for people who appreciate the deep end.

While SOLOTROFF found the internal or isolated time during the pandemic to be extremely productive, in a creative sense, once the world started to reopen, he quickly dove back into an external life of social interaction, live performance, travel, and a significantly restructured work/life balance that gave him a greater appreciation of his free creative time. Coming out of the pandemic, SOLOTROFF wanted to move forward from not only his attempts to put his own experiences of loss into sound, but to move past the collective grief that so deeply permeated the music world over the last few years. While Today The Infinite, Tomorrow Zero will likely never be accused of being a happy or optimistic sounding album, for SOLOTROFF, it demonstrates the evolution of his sound work and of his artistic path, and he sees it as representing a more positive impression of nostalgia and an internal drive that is open to possibility, for today, at least.

In advance of the release of Today The Infinite, Tomorrow Zero, SOLOTROFF today unveils first single, "The Weight Of Your Own," noting of the track, "'The Weight Of Your Own' sits at the beginning of my new album because it introduces the exact balance of sounds that I've been working towards for the last few years. Its prominent, yet abstract loop sets the tone for the hour of music that follows. While I was working on the album, I had to consciously stop myself from simply following the pattern and making nine more versions of this song. Rather, I used it as an indicator of the mood of the album that unfolds before the listener. I also had to fight myself to not let the song spool out for thirty-minutes, or more, and allowing the loop to become a more enveloping, hypnotic device. That's where I was, before. Right now, I'm trying to create more concise compositions. Maybe I actually did create an epic version? If so, I'll keep it for private use."

MARK SOLOTROFF is a Chicago-based musician and a visual artist who has worked within the experimental, post-industrial, noise, and metal scenes, dating back to the mid-1980s. SOLOTROFF is best known as the vocalist of both the doom band Anatomy Of Habit and the heavy electronic band BLOODYMINDED, and as the founder of the early American post-industrial band Intrinsic Action. His work with analog synthesizers dates back to his earliest recordings and he continues to find new ways to work with these often-unpredictable instruments. SOLOTROFF pursues several related themes in his work, including how cities develop, both organically and through organized planning, how the human body navigates urban environments, and how people navigate and interact with each other, particularly in an age of alienation caused by severe digital fragmentation. His visual work frequently features urban landscapes, architecture, and infrastructure, and he has become increasingly active in his use of artificial intelligence in his art. He’s published three books of pictures that include his own photography, found images, and AI-generated images, all of which he processes in a manner related to how he processes sound.

ANATOMY OF HABIT: Release Even If It Takes A Lifetime On Vinyl - Support Christian Death Tonight

ANATOMY OF HABIT: Experimental Post-Punk/Doom Collective Releases Even If It Takes A Lifetime On Vinyl; Band To Support Christian Death Tonight In Chicago
Even If It Takes A Lifetime, the third full-length from Chicago-based experimental post-punk/doom metal collective ANATOMY OF HABIT, is now available on vinyl!

Initially released in December on CD, cassette, and digitally, Even If It Takes A Lifetime is the first of two new albums ready to be unveiled to the public. ANATOMY OF HABIT – Alex Latus (guitar), Isidro Reyes (metal percussion), Skyler Rowe (drums), Mark Solotroff (vocals), and Sam Wagster (bass + lap steel) — recorded both offerings with Sanford Parker, shortly before the pandemic, with mixing (by Parker) and mastering (by Collin Jordan) carried out during the long shutdown. Along with the band’s core instrumentation, listeners will hear piano, organ, analog synth, and vibraphone woven into the songs.

Thematically, Even If It Takes A Lifetime continues Solotroff’s reflections on love and loss, the creative process, the abstracted and vanishing self, and a sense of absolute obliteration. The potentially nostalgic album title may allude to a sense of hope and may indicate that all is not lost, or at least it may point to an inner drive to keep pushing forward.

ANATOMY OF HABIT formed in Chicago in October 2008. Although the band has experienced significant changes since forming, this is their longest-standing and most prolific lineup. It’s no wonder that they’ve gelled the way they have. Rowe and Latus have known each other since they were teenagers, growing up in Indianapolis’ heavy music scene and playing together in the band Still. Rowe and Wagster have been creating a strong body of work together in the pastoral instrumental Mute Duo. Reyes and Solotroff are old friends who’ve played together in both BLOODYMINDED and The Fortieth Day, for many years. This deep connective tissue has contributed to consistently effortless writing sessions and solidly fused live performances.

The band incorporates elements of doom metal, post-punk, death-rock, early-industrial, psychedelic, and shoegaze. The band’s last album, Ciphers + Axioms, was released by Relapse Records. Once Even If It Takes A Lifetime completes its full cycle, the band intend to follow up with their next album, Black Openings.

“It picks up right where ANATOMY OF HABIT left off seven years ago, with Mark Solotroff’s gothy, sinister baritone leading the way over lurching, doomy instrumentals. If you’re unfamiliar with ANATOMY OF HABIT, fans of Swans, Daughters, and Nick Cave should check this out.” -- BrooklynVegan

“…an immersive, meditative, slow-building storm…” – Decibel Magazine

“Still apocalyptically heavy and thoughtfully complex, ANATOMY OF HABIT’s lost time simply vanished. It’s 2013 again and I’m watching ANATOMY OF HABIT at the Cobra Lounge, completely leveling the place, my friends and I all damaging our necks and brains and minds to the swirling mass of volume.” – Invisible Oranges

“… one of the only sets of proportions between doom metal and post-punk that could make sense and end up working out successfully... a unique experience, and one that… should leave fans of both post-punk and doom satisfied.” -- Nine Circles

“…a throbbing audio experience shrouded in cloudy electronic frequencies and harsh guitars. It might be unrelenting, but it deserves your time and patience.” -- Scream Blast Repeat

ANATOMY OF HABIT:
Alex Latus - guitar
Isidro Reyes - metal percussion
Skyler Rowe - drums, vibraphone
Mark Solotroff - vocals, analog synth

ANATOMY OF HABIT: Brooklyn Vegan Streams Even If It Takes A Lifetime

 (Re-posting from Earsplit)

ANATOMY OF HABIT: Brooklyn Vegan Streams Even If It Takes A Lifetime From Experimental Post-Punk/Doom Collective; Record To See Release This Friday!

BrooklynVegan is currently streaming Even If It Takes A Lifetime, the third full-length from Chicago-based experimental post-punk/doom metal collective ANATOMY OF HABIT, in its curious entirety.  The premiere comes in advance of the record’s official release this Friday, December 10th. This will be the first of two new albums ready to be unveiled to the public.

Comments band leader SOLOTROFF, “Once we were a supergroup, but now we’re a real band. Cream, Bad Company, The Lords Of The New Church, Traveling Wilburys, Tin Machine, Hollywood Vampires…  just to name a few. In 2014, when Ciphers + Axioms was released, ANATOMY OF HABIT was referred to as such, and while we certainly had some legitimately notable band members, it was pretty weird to hear that term used with a very underground band, like us. And as with many other bands that carry the supergroup moniker, that version of our lineup wasn’t to last very long. Not that playing with those guys wasn’t a fantastic experience. But, what’s happened over the last several years is very different. Our band was slowly rebuilt and a very powerful chemistry resulted. We put in the work, week in and week out. Song-writing seemed to come more easily to us. Shows felt very tight (but loose). We took our time before we recorded demos. Then we finally recorded more than two albums worth of material, right before the pandemic hit. We had some cool offers to release this album, but it probably wouldn’t have seen the light of day until late 2022, so we discussed several options and we ultimately decided to handle things in a more self-sufficient manner. To me, the way Alex, Isidro, Sam, Skyler, and I have pulled together, grown, and evolved is evidence of a legitimate supergroup. I couldn’t be happier to be in a band with them and to finally release our new album. Yeah, let’s just stick with the term ‘band’ this time around.”

Adds BrooklynVegan, “It picks up right where ANATOMY OF HABIT left off seven years ago, with Mark Solotroff’s gothy, sinister baritone leading the way over lurching, doomy instrumentals. If you’re unfamiliar with ANATOMY OF HABIT, fans of Swans, Daughters, and Nick Cave should check this out.”

Even If It Takes A Lifetime will be released on CD, handsomely packaged in a six-panel digipak designed by Jonathan Canady, a longtime creative associate of the band. A cassette version will also be released, with light blue shells and a four-panel insert. Decibel Magazine Premieres “Your Pure Breath”

 (Re-posting from Earsplit)

ANATOMY OF HABIT: Decibel Magazine Premieres “Your Pure Breath” From Chicago Experimental Post-Punk/Doom Collective; Even If It Takes A Lifetime To See Release Next Month
‘Your Pure Breath’ is an immersive, meditative, slow-building storm…” -- Decibel Magazine
Decibel Magazine is currently streaming "Your Pure Breath” from Chicago-based experimental post-punk/doom metal collective ANATOMY OF HABIT.  The track comes by way of the band’s third album, Even If It Takes A Lifetime, set for release on December 10th. This will be the first of two new albums ready to be unveiled to the public.

ANATOMY OF HABIT -- Alex Latus (guitar), Isidro Reyes (metal percussion), Skyler Rowe (drums), Mark Solotroff (vocals), and Sam Wagster (bass + lap steel) -- recorded both offerings with Sanford Parker, shortly before the pandemic, with mixing (by Parker) and mastering (by Collin Jordan) carried out during the long shutdown. Along with the band’s core instrumentation, listeners will hear piano, organ, analog synth, and vibraphone woven into the songs.

Elaborates band leader Solotroff of the sprawling fourteen-minute Your Pure Breath,” “When the current lineup of ANATOMY OF HABIT was gelling in late 2017 and early 2018, ‘Your Pure Breath’ was one of the first songs that we wrote together. I believe that we only played it live a couple of times, and as we were writing more and more songs, and because it proved to be a fairly problematic one for me to perform at the time, we let it sit until we were preparing to go into the studio. While we were recording it, the song unexpectedly took on a life of its own, and it grew in both length and strength. When I consider the lyrics, it seems like one of the most straightforward songs that I’ve written for ANATOMY OF HABIT, although I don’t know if someone encountering it for the first time would necessarily agree with me. While the general mood of the song is firmly planted in sullen ground, the plea for help at the end could be interpreted in a more uplifting manner. In my mind, at least, there’s a direct tie to the potentially optimistic heart of the album title. The atmosphere as the song finishes never fails to give me chills and I hope that some listeners experience the same thing.”

Adds Decibel, “‘Your Pure Breath’ is an immersive, meditative, slow-building storm…”

Anatomy of Habit announce new album

(Re-posting from Earsplit)

ANATOMY OF HABIT: Chicago Experimental Post-Punk/Doom Collective To Release Even If It Takes A Lifetime Full-Length December 10th; New Track Streaming At Invisible Oranges + Preorders Available

“…apocalyptically heavy and thoughtfully complex…” – Invisible Oranges

Chicago-based experimental post-punk/doom metal collective ANATOMY OF HABIT is excited to announce their third album, Even If It Takes A Lifetime, set for release on December 10th, 2021. This will be the first of two new albums ready to be unveiled to the public.

Even If It Takes A Lifetime is comprised of three tracks. Opener “A Marginal World” is the shortest song that the band has ever released, clocking in at under seven-minutes, and showing a greater urgency than often seen from ANATOMY OF HABIT. Lyrically, it describes a distinctive bond between two people that ends with a sudden rupture. Things begin to stretch out with “Your Pure Breath,” a 14-minute song that ebbs and flows between calmer, slower passages and heavier sections that propel the listener into a more frenzied pace. The album then shifts gears, as the long, atmospheric beginning of “Now We Finally Know Ourselves” builds into a dense, psychedelic soundscape, from which the band emerges with their more familiar play with contrast, over the song’s 19-minutes.

Thematically, the album continues band leader Solotroff’s reflections on love and loss, the creative process, the abstracted and vanishing self, and a sense of absolute obliteration. The potentially nostalgic album title may allude to a sense of hope and may indicate that all is not lost, or at least it may point to an inner drive to keep pushing forward.

In advance of the record’s release, today the band debuts opening psalm, “A Marginal World,” now playing at Invisible Oranges.

Elaborates SOLOTROFF, “When you release a new album, you never really think to yourself, ‘It’s going to be seven years until the next one comes out,’ but that’s what happened. After Ciphers + Axioms was released in late 2014, life happened, along with all of the things that involves, both good and bad. Add a global pandemic to the mix, to complicate things even further. So, we decided to take things into our own hands and get this album out into the world before another year or two suddenly passed us by. ‘A Marginal World’ kicks off the album. It’s the shortest song that we’ve ever written and it perfectly encapsulates some of the things that were absorbed into the black hole of these past several years, even if it only makes sense to me, or to us, or to a very small circle of friends outside of the band. My bandmates – my friends – and I are extremely happy that Even If It Takes A Lifetime is finally seeing the light of day and we hope that it clicks with some people out there, whether it’s the music, the lyrics, or the mood.”

Adds Invisible Oranges, “On the band’s new album Even If It Takes A Lifetime, their first in seven years, it’s like nothing changed. Still apocalyptically heavy and thoughtfully complex, ANATOMY OF HABIT‘s lost time simply vanished. It’s 2013 again and I’m watching ANATOMY OF HABIT at the Cobra Lounge, completely leveling the place, my friends and I all damaging our necks and brains and minds to the swirling mass of volume.”
