"Veteran doom-metal act YOB visited Chicago just last July, but any chance to experience the band's body-enveloping sonic wave is reason to thrill. YOB's stunning sixth album, Atma (Profound Lore), was a usual suspect on Best of 2011 lists — even gracing a couple of high-profile, all-encompassing, non-metal-specific wrap-ups, The New York Times and SPIN. But as with all who specialize in lunging-riff monoliths, you really need a PA, not your laptop soundcard. Equally drool-inducing: YOB vocalist/guitarist Mike Scheidt opens, also, performing — according to press materials — "dramatically different" solo material (expect acoustic, we think). Locals Anatomy of Habit round out the bill with their crushing epics of debasement and transgression — which'll fit about right."

“Martial Canterel is the solo moniker of Xeno & Oaklander's Sean McBride, the Wierd Records flagship artist who stands at the forefront of the coldwave/minimal synth movement. Canterel possesses a note-perfect grasp of the analog/step-sequencer aesthetic of his '80s forefathers — bands whose DIY über-obscurity made Mute and Factory Records post-punks look like stadium headliners. On the recent catalog survey Retrospective and, in particular, this year's excellent You Today, Canterel also mirrors the old era's knack for darning a kind of melancholic, even humanistic romance from so much elemental severity. Try the fleet-footed, OMD-esque melodicism of "You Today" or "Occupy These Terms."”

Having disbanded in 2003, local avant-rockers Frontier (not to be confused with Louisville outfit Frontier(s), also playing Chicago this week) took the stage last year for what seemed like a one-off reunion performance. Lucky for fans of experimental music, they're back again tonight at Abbey Pub with more of what made them semi-famous: overdriven guitar drone, ambient-noise detours, wild visual projections, and liberal use of the fog machine. No slouches in the supporting slots, either. Noise "stars" Wolf Eyes, synth frosty Envenomist, electronic punishers Bloodyminded, and grind locals Plague Bringer open.

"As is par for many noise bands, being a Wolf Eyes fan is a full-time gig. If you include self-released cassettes and limited-edition CD-Rs, the Michigan trio sired no fewer than ten releases last year alone. Always Wrong (Hospital) is most noteworthy, not simply because it's the most "official," but also for its straight, no-treatment vocals and live drums. Especially if you haven't plumbed past the Sub Pop releases into the back alleys of their catalog, these nuanced changes are a minor revelation. There's still a mess of industrial clatter and low-end belching, but Wolf Eyes continue to evolve — even as their days of mass exposure have waned — and charm ever-eager Chicago noise fans.
