The first one, from September, is more of a straight-ahead affair. If you're a big fan of my in-between song banter, well... sorry... this show didn't really deliver in that department. I was still a bit too rusty, I guess, from the long gap in shows. But if you dislike that sort of thing, then this may be an ideal live BLOODYMINDED show for you to check out.

The second one, from December, at the Peace Simulation Vol. II festival was, oddly, a matinee/daytime show, and I seemed to be more of my chatty old self. So, if you like the BLOODYMINDED standup style, then this one's for you, wherever you are.

Out Now: Mark Solotroff "Return To Oneself" 2CD

Happy New Year! This isn't my new album. As I'm still working (slowly) on that, I decided to put together a 2CD set that compiles my three digital-only singles from last winter, along with a previously unreleased 47+ minute song that I built from recordings from the same sessions as those singles and my last album. I would characterize this music as continuing and evolving the type of rough-edged minimalist drone that I composed for my two prior albums: "You May Be Holding Back" (2020) and "Not Everybody Makes It" (2021). The core components of these songs include analog synth (recorded to four-track cassette), magnetic tape sound, controlled feedback, and the occasional long distance, phantom melody. I think this music works well for attentive, close listening (over speakers or with headphones), to focus on different characteristics in the sound -- and also when it's more in the background, for activities like reading, writing, drawing, or even going to sleep. I've listened to this music quite a bit, under these different circumstances, and I really enjoy how it performs, so I hope you will too. The CDs are housed in a digipak that features black and white architectural photographs that I shot around downtown Chicago. Versions of three of the images were used for the original digital singles. I also enjoy that it sits nicely alongside my three "Strategic Planning" 2CD sets.

You May Be Holding Back As a follow-up to my recent book, Not Everybody Makes It, I'm pleased to announce the release of You May Be Holding Back. This new volume is a visual accompaniment to my 2020 electronic music album of the same name. The fifty-two black and white images are derived from photographs of architecture in Chicago, some of which I shot myself and some of which I found online, particularly in the case of structures that no longer exist. I edited and manipulated the photos in a way that parallels how I processed the analog synthesizer recordings that I created the songs on the album from. The minimal text that is included is drawn from the album title and its two song titles ("A Literal Territory Occupied Literally" and "All In The Straw Together"). Those two song titles are direct drivers for sections of the book that create a tension between sin and redemption, the sacred and the profane, and heaven and hell, as dictated by both current and former architecture found in both existing and lost zones of the city. Bloodyminded and Anatomy Of Habit founder, electronic music veteran, artist, multi-instrumentalist and all around noise mastermind MARK SOLOTROFF will release his new solo album, Not Everybody Makes It, July 30th.   MARK SOLOTROFF's artwork and music focuses on several related key themes, including how cities develop, both organically and through organized planning, how the human body navigates urban environments, and how people navigate and interact with each other, particularly in an age of alienation caused by severe digital fragmentation. The significance of these themes was enormously intensified when the global pandemic emerged in early 2020. For SOLOTROFF, a key to coping with the myriad challenges of the past year was to focus on creativity and to dive deep into a daily practice of working on diverse aspects of music production related to his bands and his solo work, including writing, recording, mixing, and mastering as well as album and T-shirt design. Recorded and mixed by SOLOTROFF during April and May of 2021 and mastered by Collin Jordan at The Boiler Room in May in 2021, Not Everybody Makes It is SOLOTROFF’s most restrained and controlled synth recording to date. Starting in 2017, SOLOTROFF released a series of recordings as limited-edition cassettes, which were also made available through the major digital platforms. An evolution from his overloaded wall-of-synth-noise Super Eight Loop recordings, which he began while living in New York and which were intended as soundtracks for walking through a pre-sterilization Times Square, his new recordings are far more nuanced and dynamic. STRATEGIC PLANNING 1-3 NOW STREAMING Thanks to everyone who supported my three recent "Strategic Planning" 2CD sets! I'm happy to announce that all three volumes of my anthology series are also heading to all major digital platforms. In 2017, I began recording and releasing a series of analog synth pieces as limited edition cassettes, some in editions of 25 copies, and some in editions of 50 or 100 copies. Some had simple packaging and some had more elaborate packaging. This work was an evolution of my overloaded wall-of-synth-noise Super Eight Loop recordings, which I began while I was living in New York, in the 1990s, and which were initially intended as soundtracks for walking through a pre-sterilization Times Square. These newer recordings were intended to be far more nuanced and dynamic. Notably, they are meant to be listened to at a more moderate volume – allowing city sounds to blend into the music – and so as not to drown out voices, traffic, construction, and other day-to-day urban sounds that one might encounter. With these releases, I went back to my familiar method of recording the synth tracks on four-track cassette, and several of these pieces are mixed with field recordings and other external sound sources, to add further personal elements to the music. Late last year, I thought about the interconnected nature of all of these releases and I decided to try to configure them in some new way and in a new format. This might appeal to those who haven't heard these recordings yet, to those who don't listen to cassettes or don't listen to streaming music, or to those who missed some of them when they were originally released. This certainly might fit in with my long history of series, formatting, and standardized packaging. There's also a dual meaning to and an inside joke connected to the title, which some people might get. It's not really that funny, but it makes me chuckle. During this past April and May, I worked on the follow-up to my 2020 album, "You May Be Holding Back," and mastering was completed by Collin Jordan at The Boiler Room at the end of last month. Mark Solotroff "Live In Wierd" Live Recording + T-shirt In late 2007, Pieter asked me if I'd like to perform a microphone feedback set at Wierd, that winter. I'm sure that we both knew that harsh feedback would be more sonically confrontational than the weekly crowd there was used to, but it seemed like a good plan, nevertheless. Bear in mind, this was prior to when experimental, power-electronics, and noise artists played the weekly Wierd party on a more frequent basis. A date was chosen in mid-January of 2008, and on the day of the show I flew to New York with a small mixer and ten microphones. I did a quick soundcheck in the late afternoon, while the bar was being set up for the night ahead, and things sounded loud and clear over the Wierd PA. That night, as was typical, the room became more and more crowded and the dance floor filled up, as midnight approached. I made my way through the dark space to clear some space to place my mic stands in an arc and to get my show underway. As you'll hear at the beginning of the recording, there were some ringers in the audience, including James from BLOODYMINDED and Alex from Climax Denial, who were visiting from Milwaukee. That resulted in some good spirited heckling, like you'd probably hear at a BLOODYMINDED show. I let the frequencies and the volume build up slowly, resulting in an uncomfortable space filled with mild static and the sound of an industrial-sized smoke machine in overdrive. I remember that once the feedback fully kicked in, the crowd began to thin out a bit, but it was really hard to see exactly what was going on through the thick fog ("The sky is so thick with smoke"). After about ten minutes of heavy feedback, someone got in my face and yelled at me to stop. Apparently, the bouncer from Home Sweet Home felt it was way too loud and he lost his shit. My feedback performances were never meant to be confrontational or to elicit the same sort of crowd reaction as an Intrinsic Action or a BLOODYMINDED show. I imagined that they were somehow more academic in nature, but I suppose that it's all just noise to some people. Once I was done, it was only a matter of minutes before I untangled all my mic cords and packed up and people were back to dancing. While I've never felt that live recordings have done justice to these feedback shows, whether in capturing the full intensity of the frequencies at high volume, or especially the physical effects that audience members have related to me, like the pressure they felt in their inner ears or the sensation of air moving around them, I think this recording holds its own, pretty well.
