Scene Point Blank on Anatomy of Habit

Anatomy Of Habit

Ciphers + Axioms

Put together great musicians from diverse backgrounds and you are bound to get something special. That is what happens with Anatomy of Habit and their debut album. With an impressing line up which includes guitarist Will Lindsay of Indian, drummer John McEntire of Tortoise, percussionist Theo Katsaounis of Joan of Arc, bassist Kenny Rasmussen (previously of Radar Eyes) and of course fronted by Mark Solotroff of Bloodyminded, you can be sure that this is bound to be interesting. The band had already released an EP back in 2012, giving us a first taste of their sound and raising the expectations.

It is quite difficult to pinpoint the style of Anatomy of Habit, since each member puts a piece in the musical identity puzzle. In the two songs of Ciphers + Axioms (which run for more than twenty minutes each), the band is able to throw together post-rock, deathrock, noise, post-punk and doom to create their own twisted outlook of reality. What is stunning about this band is how they are capable of retaining fluidity, especially when things take a turn for the more abstract, as they do in the opening track where the mixture of doom metal and post rock in the beginning of “Radiate and Recede” gives out a very mesmerizing vibe.

Throughout the record Mark Solotroff gives a great performance on the vocals. The manner in which his voice accompanies the music is splendid. The big vocals in the start of both songs create an imposing feeing which is overwhelming to say the least. Especially the evolution of the tonality of Solotroff’s voice in “Radiate and Recede” is astounding, starting from the big, almost narrative sound and steadily becoming more threating and menacing, finally breaking out full-blown extreme about twelve minutes in the song, with screams all over the place. A thing of beauty, Solotroff’s voice gives a huge boost to the nature of the band’s modus operandi. On top of the repetitive patterns that they implement and their mesmerizing melodies, they create a magnificent sonic illusion.

Anatomy of Habit masterfully creates maze-like structures which overpower the listener. The first four minutes of “Radiate and Recede” are able to submerge you in their abstract concepts with ease, while the “Ciphers and Axioms” lines in “Then Window” keeps being repeated over and over again, slowly grinding your mind. Especially though the final part of “Then Windows” the circling nature of Anatomy of Habit really stands out, with the noise side of the band taking over completely, slowly deconstructing the song to its most basic parts. The percussion also aids greatly in all this, always coming up with some interesting sounds and adding an extra texture on the sonic pallet of Anatomy of Habit. On top of all that Lindsay’s guitar lines tie in perfectly. Whether they are taking a turn for the more hypnotic, as they do in the first part of “Radiate and Recede,” or the more dreamlike guitar vibe, about four minutes in “Then Windows,” it is always interesting and enticing. And once in every while of course, you will get the heavier parts of the band, when they bring out their doom-ier vibe. The thundering drums and heavy riffs about four minutes in “Radiate and Recede” really stand out, as do the doom riffs about six minutes in the opening song. There are even turns when things get more furious, for instance about eight minutes in “Radiate and Recede” and in the beginning of “Then Windows.”

Still with that impressive lineup what is expected is what Anatomy of Habit do in terms of sonic experimentation, and in Ciphers+Axioms they do not disappoint. The background sounds are key for the concepts of the band. The guitar adds greatly in the first two minutes of the opening song, adding more variation to the part, while the implementation of feedback, for example about fourteen minutes in “Radiate and Recede,” will melt your face off, leading to a clinic of experimentation of the guitar sounds in the ending of the song and an exploration of its capabilities. And in “Then Windows” it just blows out of proportion, with the fantastic build up for the first ten minutes leading up to an anti-climactic change while the guitar is trying out some stranger sounds, which manage to always sound suitable for the music.

The noise input of Solotroff is quite obvious in the album, even though it is kept on a tighter lease. “Radiate and Recede” seems to be flirting with noise but never really giving in to it completely. Especially about six minutes in the song, the noise background seems to be ready to take over completely and change the setting to a more ambient music moment. And of course in the second half of “Then Windows” you get the great input of noise slowly oppressing the music until it recedes and the track is deconstructed.

Even though Ciphers + Axioms contains such a plethora of different musical concepts, the members of the band are able to keep them in check and focus on the big picture. The album manages to remain interesting throughout and will not let you catch your breath for an instant.

Anatomy of Habit Sign to Relapse Records

Relapse Records is proud to announce the signing of Chicago, IL quintet Anatomy of Habit. Formed in October 2008 and featuring current and former members of BLOODYMINDED, Tortoise, Wolves in the Throne Room, Joan of Arc, Indian and many other bands, the group play a haunting, psychedelically terrifying blend of doom metal, post-punk, death-rock, noise-rock, and shoegaze. Anatomy of Habit, composed of Theo Katsaounis (Percussion), Will Lindsay (Guitar), John McEntire (Drums), Kenny Rasmussen (Bass), Mark Solotroff (Vocals), have released an eponymous LP (2011) and EP (2012) plus a CD compiling both vinyl only releases.

The band recorded their upcoming Relapse debut with renowned producer Sanford Parker (Corrections House, Cough, YOB) at Soma Electronic Music Studios in Chicago and it is expected to see a late 2014 release.

The members commented on signing to Relapse:

"Anatomy of Habit is thrilled to join the Relapse family, which in many ways is already very close to us. The label has been a strong supporter of the Chicago dark/heavy music scene that we are part of, and several of our friends have records on the label, including Indian (who we share our guitarist Will Lindsay with), Bloodiest, High Confessions, Circle of Animals, Minsk, Locrian and Chris Connelly. Vocalist Mark Solotroff has seen his noise releases (BLOODYMINDED, Intrinsic Action) supported by Relapse mail-order over the years, he added synth tracks to Brutal Truth's 2009 album, Evolution Through Revolution, and to Indian's latest album, From all Purity, he has worked closely with Locrian since their inception, he released a CD by former Relapse artists Dead World, and he released the vinyl version of Chris Connelly's Artificial Madness on his BloodLust! label. The band feels like we are in very good hands and we appreciate the ongoing interest and support that Relapse has shown us, practically since we formed in 2008. Working with Sanford Parker on our new album brought us that much closer to the label, so it finally seemed like the right time to seal the deal. We are excited to get the new record out into the world and we are already writing material for our next album."

Anatomy of Habit debut their new lineup tomorrow night

Posted by  today at 02.24 PM

Anatomy of Habit

  • Anatomy of Habit
At the beginning of the year, Gossip Wolf reported that monstrous local five-piece Anatomy of Habit had retooled their lineup, and now, five months later, we get to see the refurbished band live, opening for French post-rockers Ulan Bator at Cobra Lounge on Friday night. Anatomy of Habit, a band known for intense, terrifying post-metal dirges and heady experimental rock, have bid farewell to guitarist Greg Ratajczak, metal percussionist Blake Edwards, and drummer Noah Leger (who had replaced original drummer Dylan Posa), and have added even more star power to the lineup.
Guitar duties are now being handled by Indian and former Wolves in the Throne Room member Will Lindsay, a local heavy-metal guru. John McEntire, Tortoise member and owner of Soma Electronic Music Studios, will be handling the drum kit. And the newest addition to the lineup is Joan of Arc drummer Theo Katsaounis, who will be taking over on secondary percussion.
That's a lot of personality and volume right there. My prediction is that Anatomy of Habit will somehow be even bigger and scarier than before. No recorded output with the new guys is available yet, but the band, which puts out their own material, has been releasing a constant stream of music since their inception, so we're bound to hear what they've created sometime very soon.
As for the former members of the band? As I reported a couple of months ago, Ratajczak is back to making noise with his old cyber-grind project Plague Bringer, and Leger has taken up the drum throne with Disappears, who you may have heard of before.
Everything the band has recorded—with their original lineup, at least—is available for free streaming on their Bandcamp page. And in case you didn't pick up on it earlier in this post, it's absolutely excellent.

Gossip Wolf: New blood in Anatomy of Habit

From the Chicago Reader:

We haven't heard much from Anatomy of Habit, Chicago's unholy apostles of the long-form metal dirge, since original drummer Dylan Posa left town last March—but core members Mark Solotroff, Blake Edwards, and Kenny Rasmussen have two new tracks in the can that both top 20 minutes—and Solotroff says "Radiate and Recede" is "probably the heaviest thing that we have recorded." Guitarist Will Lindsay (Indian, Wolves in the Throne Room) has replaced Greg Ratajczak, and Tortoise drummer John McEntire has taken over behind the kit; the sessions were at McEntire's studio, Soma, with Sanford Parker behind the boards. Both Lindsay and McEntire are also part of the band's live lineup, which debuts this spring. There's no release date yet for the new material, but a self-released CD compiling AOH's first LP and EP should be out in February, distributed by Solotroff's BloodLust! label.
