New Pharmakon Interview

The very first Anatomy of Habit show was with Locrian, The Human Quena Orchestra and Pharmakon. Ms. Margaret Chardiet AKA Pharmakon has also shared the stage and played with Mark Solotroff's band BLOODYMINDED, even doing a live duet with Mark that is yet to be recorded. Surprisingly, here is her very first interview, in anticipation of her show tonight with the mighty Bone Awl: http://janepain.wordpress.com/2012/04/06/i-want-to-talk/

It says "synth" up in the credits and there were synths hooked up.  This was one of those CHAOS REIGNS type of BLOODYMINDED shows.  Trouble shooting?  There was no time for that.  After Raspberry Bulbs (who I thoroughly enjoyed!) finished, the basement space (more on that) cleared out and we got started setting up.  Within only a few minutes, I turned around from having my back to the room, while we were hooking up our gear, only to find that the place was full again.  People were jockeying for space at the front.  Right in front.  Of us.  We tried to move swiftly, as the night was running pretty late/long, and I suppose something was not double-checked in the process.  Once we got started, it was all mics, voice and feedback, and the synths basically vanished.  But we work with chaos, right?  We always have.  So we continued to motor through the set, and James swiftly began to manipulate the EQs of each mic, as I do in solo performances, to add some greater definition and differentiation to the tones.  The crowd was right up in our face, screaming, cheering, pumping fists, and making sure the energy stayed at a high level.  Fuck your synths, this is BLOODYMINDED, back in 120-degree, dank, humid, layer of beer/sweat/mud on slick white tile floor mode.  What do you do?  Not die.  We plowed along. Mics bust lips.  Large amps topple over multiple times.  One lands on my foot.  I have the swollen purple sausage toes to prove it.  Power cuts out.  We continue.  For "PORN LORDS," we bring Margaret back to the, uh, stage.  She and I layer vocals, do call-and-response... get through it.  Best intentions were that we would revisit the song that we wrote and performed together last year in Chicago -- "NOW IT IS A PRIVATE THING" -- but we had both been too busy lately to really do the song justice this time around.  We continue.  The three of us are soaked through from head to toe.  I am hemmed in but try to make my way into the crowd.  I lean more than I push.  It is too slick to gain traction.  The crowd roars out the words "AIDS WARD" as we introduce song number fifteen and that gives us the energy to reach the end.  We shut off and people started screaming for more.  Okay, fine, but what?  The loudest song title I heard was "HEAD," so a blast song was easy to switch back on and shriek through.

Our massive thanks go out to all of our friends at the Red Light District, for having us out there for this excellent event.  I am really pleased that we were finally able to do it, even if the results were a bit unpredictable.  Thanks also to all of our friends who made the long trek out to Far Rockaway, including an excellent showing from thee Wierd world.  Big thanks also to Allison and Mike for the ride back to Bushwick!!!  I personally heard/saw such great music/performances throughout the night and I met a lot of really cool, nice people.  I wish that I could have been there for Friday's sets, but the weather and air traffic control did not comply.  Regarding that, thanks to the ladies at Pumps in East Williamsburg for a fun way to salvage the latter part of Friday night!  It was great hanging out all weekend with my Wierd family, including Erin, Josh, Sean, Liz, and Kristin...and it is always hard to break away to make my flight on time...

Halloween Recap

Well, if the state of my ears this morning is any indication of how insanely loud it was last night (thanks Tony!)... and what a night it was! It was such a pleasure to join in the festivities with both Rabid Rabbit and Indian. My thanks to all of them for including me in such a killer show. I had the best of both worlds, getting to see/hear two of my favorite Chicago bands play incredible sets and getting to jump up on stage with them for a pair of intense songs. With Rabid Rabbit it was a reprise of "Suicide Song" (AKA "Gloomy Sunday"), which I first performed with them back in February. For this outing, Dave Rempis, who is also on the studio version, joined in live... another one of those "How have we never met before?" scenarios. It was cool to meet him and to play with him. And with Indian, I played synth/noise and I provided a few quick screams on "Worshipper of Sores," from their 2005 album, "The Unquiet Sky." And, in the middle of that, was a totally monumental performance by Monarch. As a huge Winter fan (the band, not the season, for fuck's sake), it was great to hear something equally glacial sounding, but with a uniquely feminine feel to it. Emilie's vocals were devastating -- at one point, all I could think of was Monarch!/Pharmakon split 12-inch -- and, my god, their set was remarkably tight... not at all belying the fact that my bandmate Kenny Rasmussen from Anatomy of Habit was playing drums for them after only two days to learn "Sabbat Noir" and to practice with them. Kenny did a phenomenal job and they sounded fantastic. They were also such nice people to hang out with, even if only briefly. It was great to see so many friends come out to the show and to see such a full house in support of what has definitely become a Chicago institution... Halloween at The Hideout...

Tonight at Wierd

Re-Posting for Pieter:

Tonite's performance at WIERD will be an absolute celebration of the wild, internal, pathos-fueld battlefield of the physical body internal - of the wonderful powers inherent deep in the THROAT to be specific...yet this 21st century throat will have no voice to en-Counter as muse...but rather just present itself on stage as a smooth, long, wet and porous vessel of latenight pleasure ready to take you into the kingdom of its loins for 20 minutes of terrifyingly erotic, cold, analogue bliss...as WIERD welcomes the premiere of 'THE DESCENT' a live theatrical performance extravaganza featuring the VReturn of performance artist, adult film star and absolute master of enjoyment XXPLXT Angel, with a live musical score by our beloved young heroes and perhaps the last true hope for keeping the fantastically violent, visceral power of industrial music alive in America THROAT(Margaret Margaret Chardiet/Pharmakon + Ryan Woodhall/Yellow Tears)...this will be an evening unlike any other in WIERD history...better take a quick pic of yr dick and sext IT while its still there, as you dare to get VERY RARE...click ahhh nooo... :)))

Very rare, indeed. From a technical standpoint, the night was flawless --- and with everything on the line due to us using the new Korg Monotron synths - and running them through FX pedals --- and just for context,
our last show with pedals was No Fun Fest 2005, which was a glorious clusterfuck --- let alone adding a new person (Margaret) into the mix with her keyboard. Of course, James handled the live mix in a masterful way, and everything came through loud and clear and Pieter managed not to get tangled up in the FX wires... just my mic cords and all of our synth cables. I actually forgot that I had a synth set-up on stage, and I only noticed/remembered at the end of the set, as I was too wrapped up in the performance. The not-exactly-unfamiliar set was designed to flow easily and quickly and to keep the crowd participation at a high, which it did. We tore through the 16 songs in under half an hour and the recordings of the show sound pretty fucking great. Aside from all of the people who were there to see A-Frames and Headache City, we had a really nice group of friends who came out early to support us, not to mention a decent-sized crew who took some time out to come down from the festival being held at the Viaduct Theater, so we had a pretty active pit in front of us. There was a humorous mix of bodies flying around, including Alex from Climax Denial, Ted from Twodeadsluts Onegoodfuck, and Dave Phillips (Schimpfluch-Gruppe/Fear of God) who was in town for the festival. Nice! Of course, the focal point for us all was the new song ("Now It Is A Private Thing") that Margaret and I had specially prepared for the show. James took over on her keyboard, allowing her to step up front with me, and she immediately began to stare me down in the most disarming manner. The atmosphere was completely electrifying... chilling, really... and it made my delivery - at least - all the much more effective. We have been getting such amazingly positive feedback over the last few days, particularly about the new song -- and it is clear that we need to record it with her in the studio ASAP. Overall, the layers of Pieter, Isidro, and James' synths combined with Margaret's keyboard chords, sounded fantastic. And just when songs needed an extra push, Isidro and James were there with their strong and contrasting vocals. I did not end up too bruised or sore afterward, so I am not sure if that means Pieter went easy on me or if I just managed to dodge him better than I usually do, but I will take it. Isidro had to jet back to work right away, which was a shame, and Margaret headed to the Viaduct, but the rest of us spent the night between the Bottle and one of the Polish bars down the street where a large group of friends had gathered. It was funny to have the poppier of the two bands follow us, but Headache City tore through a set that somehow took in the melodic style of The Jam, maybe, with a heavy dose of Misfits swagger and structure... weird... ultra-catchy. Insane drumming action! No synth on Saturday, though. Even with a blown guitar amp (we saw smoke!), A-Frames soldiered through a deep set of dark, snarky, and paranoid songs that painted a very grim picture of our future. Ultra-minimalistic Gang of Four structures, Joy Division textures, and J.G. Ballard-influenced storytelling. I would like to see them paired with Daily Void someday. At one point, I was reminded of Special Affect, but my memory of that LP is extremely fuzzy, as I sold it years ago during Wax Trax! fever at Bleecker Bob's, so who knows??? A big THANKS to Margaret for playing with us. Thanks to all of our friends for the excellent support. Thanks to Wes for shooting video. Holy god, the slow motion footage of the song with Margaret is beyond intense! Thanks to The Empty Bottle for having us back, as always, and for the great hospitality. And thanks to Arman for inviting us to play his birthday show. Photos soon, I hope... I saw some good ones.

Saturday Night...

On Saturday August 21, 2010, Seattle's A-Frames storm The Empty Bottle in support of their new triple-LP set on S.S. Records, which serves as a long-awaited follow up to their critically acclaimed "Black Forest" LP on Sub Pop Records. The vast new "333" set gathers the post-punk/noise-rock band's singles and e.p.s, along with demo recordings, outtakes, and unreleased tracks. Joining them will be a revitalized Headache City, the dark garage-punk band launched in Chicago and now calling New York home, while they lock in with a new drummer and prepare to record a new batch of songs. The group continue to turn heads and assault ears with their late-2009 LP "We Can't Have Anything Nice" on P-Trash Records. Starting off the night with a bang, Chicago's BLOODYMINDED will deliver their punk and noise-rock inspired brand of heavy electronics, characterized by jolting analog synth blasts, chaotic feedback and howling vocals. For this very special show, the band will be joined by NYC's Pharmakon - AKA Margaret Chardiet - who performed a jaw-dropping set of hard-hitting death-industrial music at The Empty Bottle in July 2009. BLOODYMINDED's Mark Solotroff and Miss Chardiet are writing a new song for this show, which they intend to perform as a lovely duet.
