- I am back in Chicago
- I have a lot of e-mail to attend to
- I will try to do a Post Office run within the next day or two, to catch up on mail orders
- Pieter's opening was amazing, and it was great to see so many friends there. Between Wierd on Wednesday and the gallery and the after-party on Sunday, it was so cool that people made the trek in, from rather far away, to support Pieter and me
- While I was in New York, I was pleased to hear what will hopefully become the tracks for a private series 7-inch by Martial Canterel
- I am wrapping up the initial work on the first release in an exciting series of archival CD EPs from Sleep Museum
- At Pieter's opening, Ken and Brandon from Terrible Eagle (and Indian Jewelry, etc.) handed me a CD-R of edits from our Saturday recording session in Long Island City. We all seem to be pretty pleased with the results, and we are discussing what we might want to do with the material. My vocabulary seems a bit limited, in terms of describing it, but after listening to it at Pieter's studio, Alex from Climax Denial used the term, "aggro trance"

NYC Activity
Friday highlights:
Helping out with Pieter's show installation at Miguel Abreu Gallery... or trying not to be a nuissance.
Seeing the John Miller, Mike Kelly, Tony Conrad, and Jutta Koether performance at Friedrich Petzel Gallery. I was stuck just outside the gallery for their first "set," due to the large crowd... but after most of the attendees left, they did another set of about 20 or 30 minutes. It was a lot of fun.
Dinner, and then later, drinks, with various wonderful friends.
Saturday highlights:
Recording session in the ass-end (even though near the top) of Long Island City with Brandon and Ken from Terrible Eagle (also current and ex- Indian Jewelry and Electric Set). Really enjoyable afternoon session on a cold day. Walked into a soundproofed room full of gear and we just went to town. I mostly focused on vocals (sung/chanted) - some controlled feedback - and some electronics. They promised to bring the results to Pieter's opening, tonight.
Low-key night, really... saving up energy for tonight... delicious bbq beef bee-bim bop at Snacky, with Pieter and Erin.
Off we go..........................

Wierd 311
Thanks to everyone who came out to see me at Wierd on Wednesday night. Thanks so much to Pieter for having me back! It is always a pleasure (...seekers...) Thanks to Glenn, for help with sound. Thanks to Sean/Martial Canterel and James/Blacklist, for extra microphone stands. There was a pretty amazing mix of people at Home Sweet Home that night... from James and Alex from Milwaukee... to Arthur from Allentown... to John from The Cathode Terror Secretion and Jeremy from Halflings... to Miles from Kalamazoo and his crew... to Chris/Little Enjoyer... to more recent Chicago (and area) transplants like Brandon from Electric Set and Kurtis... to all the very rare Wierd people who show me such great support... even those who were not up for the feedback... Yep, and a 311 call had come in shortly before I was supposed to play, so the volume could not really be all that it was hoped for. Wierd is really struggling with a tenant in the building above the bar. That said, I did what I could with my feedback frequencies, before maxing everything out. The best part for me is that it forced me to rely on vocals more, and as I had just done in Chicago on Saturday, I utilized the lyrics to "In Fives," singing them in a different way... a bit more monotone, but still with a melody, albeit a different one than with Animal Law. The result, easily one of my favorite solo shows yet, one in which I was further forced out of my comfort zone. And into the dense fog...
Other NYC highlights, thus far...
Right off of the plane and over to the Martial Canterel analog studio supreme... for previews of new songs (private series, included!!!) even with some live vocals added for maximum pleasure.
Having to find an alternate route into Manhattan yesterday afternoon after someone purportedly tried to jump off of the Williamsburg Bridge, causing the bridge to be shut down and causing a subway service suspension.
Making it through a good chunk of Chelsea before the rain started last night. Of note: the Luis Gispert show at Mary Boone - specifically, a pretty amazing, rather dark film called, "Smother."
An odd session over at Hospital.
Off to Miguel Abreu Gallery while Pieter's paintings are installed...
More soon...

Cleveland in Chicago
A quick recap of last night's show at The Flowershop... Slave Trade (A.K.A. Brett Naucke of Druids of Huge/Catholic Tapes) started off the night with a totally to-the-point, no fucking around, short, sharp burst of the type of electronics that he contributes to Druids of Huge, but in completely distilled form for maximum impact. I am looking forward to listening to the tape that he handed me. Maybe after this Deviated Instinct CD is over. Is was up next, and Bryan utilized a disconnected turntable tone arm and string of effects boxes to create a solid flurry of controlled feedback and electronic noise. I was up next and I progressively modulated several channels of microphone feedback before slowly integrating the lyrics to the Animal Law song, "In Fives," using a different, monotone melody... sung, nevertheless. I was pretty satisfied with the results. Bee Mask pulled a switcheroo and went on next. Chris' main sound source were two small glass jars - and I hope that I remember this correctly - with photosensitive circuits or circuit boards --- and as he used a mechanic's work lamp to alter the light in the otherwise dark room (I think that he also had some tea-lite candles in his suitcase) --- the output, which ran through different effects, was modulated in a really interesting way. The results were pretty outstanding... deep space soundtrack sort of stuff. Head music. Yep. David Russell (ex-Jerk, etc.) and Wyatt Howland (A.K.A. Skin Graft) finished off the night with a heavier, more kitchen-sink sort of set, pretty much pummeling the audience into submission with electronic and acoustic (smashing cymbals, small metal ball-bells thrown into the audience) sounds. Thanks to David, I have been, with pleasure, following a lot of the recorded output of these sorts of collaborations, including the great trio version that brings Tusco Terror's Nathan Bowers (actually in attendance last night) into the fold - the line-up that I saw in October, in Cleveland. An intense end to a fun night!
Thanks to Mykel Boyd for the rides, thanks to Adam Osaka and Mykel for the great dinner company. Thanks to all the friends who showed up to support the night. Thanks to Henry at The Flowershop, for hosting the show. Thanks to David, for asking me to join in.
