Frontier Psychiatrist on Anatomy of Habit

Thanks to Jordan Mainzer of Frontier Psychiatrist for the write-up on our recent show:

3/17 – Indian/Bloodiest/Anatomy of Habit/An Aesthetic Anaesthetic @ Subterranean, Chicago

At least the first three of four acts had senses of humor, or rather a lighter side. Math rockers and wordplay aficionados An Aesthetic Anaesthetic (creators of a song called “Randy Quaidludes”) announced that they were only playing two songs. Little did newbies know how tongue-in-cheek they were being, considering that both songs ranged from ten to twenty minutes, rendering the set actually longer than usual for the first of four acts. Anatomy of Habit had a lighter side simply by virtue that they weren’t hard rock or metal; they sounded like a noisier Joy Division (you know you’re in for a dark night when the Joy Division-inspired band is the least dark). And Bloodiest, despite their name, mustered up enough snark to declare, “Fuck the Irish!” as an anti-St. Patrick’s Day statement. This was all leading up to the band whose record release show it was: local doom miserabilists Indian. Indian’s From All Purity is one of the best albums of the year so far, let alone metal albums. At the Subterranean, their disturbing songs like “Rape” and “Directional” sounded exactly as they should, cracking and whipping and pummeling forcefully but at a brutally slow speed, like the best doom. This was one of the best shows of the year so far.

BLOODYMINDED Announces Will Lindsay as New Band Member

The members of BLOODYMINDED could not be happier to announce that Will Lindsay has officially joined the fold.  Will played synth at the band's last show, the recording of which was initially bundled with orders of the new Hercules and Antaeus T-shirt, and which was subsequently released via Bandcamp.  Will joins BLOODYMINDED at an exciting time, as the band is finally set to release its long-awaited new album, "Within The Walls."

This news follows the statement earlier in the year regarding Will joining Anatomy of Habit, as that band's new guitar player. He has already recorded with AoH on their as yet untitled second album, which will be released in 2014, and he played his first show with the band in May.  AoH are currently writing new material, in anticipation of their third album.

When questioned on the subject, Mark Solotroff, vocalist in both bands, grumbled something about a master plan, but he would not elaborate, when pressed for details.

Will is a very busy man and he continues to play guitar in Indian, who have a new album (which Solotroff contributed synth to) due in 2014, on Relapse. He also recently recorded guitar (along with Kim Thayil!) on the new A Storm Of Light album, "Nations To Flames."  Will's former bands include Nachtmystium, Wolves in the Throne Room and Middian, and he played bass on the Chris Connelly's "Artificial Madness," released on LP by BloodLust! in late-2012.  Welcome Will!

Indian Synth Session

My thanks to the gentlemen of Indian, and Sanford Parker, for having me over to Soma to contribute some synth/noise to the next Indian album on Relapse. Will Lindsay brought in his modular rig, and I went back to the Wasp that we used on the forthcoming Anatomy of Habit album, since I have a bunch of my gear set up at the Wrekmeister Harmonies space right now.  I tried a couple of Endangered Audio Research pedals, including The Gristleizer, which were fun to mess with, as I am not at all well-versed in the boutique pedal world.  That combination seems way too old-world industrial though...EDP Wasp+Gristleizer...Ha!

Mark Solotroff with Indian on Saturday February 9

Mark Solotroff will be filling in on noise/synth for Indian this Saturday when they open for Yob at The Flat Iron. It's for a good cause, too. See you there:

Will Lindsay Joins Anatomy Of Habit

We are extremely pleased to announce that Will Lindsay has joined Anatomy of Habit as our new guitar player. Will recently played guitar during the recording sessions for our forthcoming second LP and he previously substituted on bass guitar at a one-off show to help us out in a pinch. We look forward to beginning writing new songs with Will, likely after he returns from the upcoming Mutilation Rites tour, when he will be sitting in on bass for Ryan Jones, who had conflicting tour commitments with Today is the Day. Will continues to play in Indian, while his former bands include Nachtmystium and Wolves in the Throne Room. Will also played on the Chris Connelly "Artificial Madness" LP, recently released on BloodLust! Please join us in welcoming Will to the band...

We had a great night at The Hideout on Halloween Eve.  Thanks to Indian and Rabid Rabbit for asking us to be a part of the annual Halloween heaviness there.  Thanks to all of our friends who came out to have a good time on Sunday!  After Steven warmed the crowd up a bit with some excellent selections (all night, actually!), we went on in front of a nice, full room.  There was a strong turnout from the noise scene here but you could tell that there was a lot of confusion within the audience, as many people were likely expecting a (doom) metal band.  But as we warmed up, so did the crowd, and within a few minutes, the energy level picked up.  As it was a Halloween celebration, we decided to go as "Early BLOODYMINDED," so we all dug out the leather, I pulled out the huge microphone snake (mid-era, really), and we even asked founding member Megan Emish (also ex-Intrinsic Action) to join us for her second show in 13 or 14 years, the last one being over 5 years ago.  "Mantra" was always her specialty and it was great to hear her screams (unaided by amplification) ripping through the air as we wrapped up our performance.  It was definitely one of my favorite sets in a LONG time, and it oddly enough even seemed to have a sort of story arc to it.  Not just the more typical "on-off-on-off" kind of thing.  Afterwards, I joined Rabid Rabbit on "Suicide Song" (AKA "Gloomy Sunday") from their forthcoming LP on BloodLust!  They sounded fantastic on Sunday... Dark and heavy as hell... And you could really hear all of the elements of their style, running from doom metal to psychedelic to even a heavy shoegazer thing.  Indian capped off the night by just annihilating the place with their caustic, ugly, blackened sound.  They were loud as hell, but their mix was actually better than at last year's show, making each part of their sound stand out, especially the blood-curdling vocals.  Cheers to Joey for the great, vivid, loud sound!

Chicago Reader on Rabid Rabbit + 10/30 show

From the Chicago Reader

Indian, Rabid Rabbit, Bloodyminded, DJ Steve Hess

When: Sun., Oct. 30, 9 p.m.
Price: $5
Czarny Sen (Bloodlust!), the second full-length from local quartet Rabid Rabbit, has been long awaited around these parts—Readermusic editor Philip Montoro wrote back in August about how great the album is. The double-bass-guitar attack has always given their doomy weight a grave-deep foundation, and their newest member, guitarist Dan Sullivan (Arriver), brings a spectacular, nimble style that distills the whole history of heavy music into a crisp palette—if the right color doesn't exist, he'll simply MacGyver the hell out of it. Just listen to the ecstatic eruption of crystalline tones under Andrea Jablonski's deadpan, eerie Polish chanting at the climax of "Eclipse." The album includes a new 12-minute version of "Suicide," a longtime live showstopper of theirs, that features "auxiliary member" Dave Rempis splattering sax deliriously all over the place. (Other hot-shit guests I wouldn't be surprised to see at this show include Yakuza's Bruce Lamont, Bloodyminded's Mark Solotroff, and percussionist Michael Zerang.) It's a real thrill to watch a local band get as good as this; I'll match them up against any other avant-doom merchants in the world. —Monica Kendrick Indian headlines; Rabid Rabbit, Bloodyminded, and DJ Steve Hess open.

AoH - 4/9 - Recap + news

Thanks to all of our friends who came out to support us last night! What an amazing night to be a part of. Even with three competing metal shows - plus Robert Plant at The Auditorium Theater, where I would have been if not for this show - we had an excellent crowd at Subterranean. The club took great care of us, holding the doors until we completed a solid soundcheck, and - bless them - we had loaders last night, so the mountains of Emperor cabinets and Sunn heads, etc., made their way up the steep steps without us breaking our backs. Major thanks go to Indian and Bloodiest, for including us in their dual record release show, and for the ongoing support that folks in both bands have shown us. It is MUCH appreciated. Both bands sounded incredible last night... two very different interpretations of doom... one more warm and enveloping and one more cold and nihilistic... you guess which was which. Lots of people saw us for the first time last night and it was humbling to get such positive feedback from both "veterans" and "virgins"! Thanks to everyone who stopped me to offer such kind words. It was also really nice for me to revisit our earliest setlist. meaning playing "Overcome" and "Torch"... allowing me to just go for it, vocally, if and when I felt like it. Greg brought some truly haunting new guitar sounds to "Overcome," which sound amazing on the recording that I am listening to right now. So now... a break for sure in live shows during May... maybe something in June if things solidify... and big news... We are booked for mastering (FINALLY!) at the end of June with Bob Weston (of Shellac) at Chicago Mastering Service... He will cut out lacquers, which will then go on to plating and pressing, as quickly as is humanly possible...

The Vinyl District on 4/9

From The Vinyl District

TVD Recommends: Indian & Bloodiest at Subterranean, 4/9

Indian

Chicago, prepare to have your faces melted. Two of the city’s heaviest take the stage at Subterranean this Saturday for a dual record release show. Headlining are our own hometown stalwarts of sludge Indian, supporting the release of their third full-length Guiltless, which comes out this Tuesday on Relapse.

Joining them on the bill are label mates Bloodiest, who released their debut album Descent just last week. A fairly new group, the seven piece Bloodiest count ex & current members of Follows, 90 Day Men, Atombombpocketknife, and Yakuza’s Bruce Lamont among their ranks.

Bloodiest

Advance tickets are available here for 8 bucks. Doors open at 9pm, and openers Anatomy of Habit take the stage at 10pm. Subterranean is located at 2011 W. North Ave in Wicker Park.
