Mark Solotroff with Wrekmeister Harmonies...Again! (3/8)

J.R. and I really liked the piece we played on Monday night at The Empty Bottle, so he asked me to join him this Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM (no, really, 1:00 in the afternoon) to play it again at Hideout Inn, as Wrekmeister Harmonies are part of the annual SXSW Send Off Party. I will not, however, be traveling to Austin.

Beatcrave on AoH 5/12

A nice write-up on tonight's show from beatcrave.com

Anatomy of Habit | Saturday, May 12 | 9:00 pm | 21+ | $8 | Hideout, Chicago, IL – Map | The Chicago-based band’s morose and melancholy sound brings the glittery and uber shiny aspect of most mainstream music to a level more moderate, but really only by a few notches. They are of a very layered alternative rock, post-punk sound, with an overall by-degrees execution of sound progression and the right amount of edge at the right time to peak where needed. Very engaging, involving, and smartly done, perfect for the intimate Chicago venue. With Chord, John Mueller

The Chicagoist on AoH

Really kind words about Anatomy of Habit from Jon Graef at The Chicagoist:

One of Chicago's most singular, distinctive bands is post-everything act Anatomy of Habit, who concoct a delectable sonic witches' brew comprised of doom metal, shoegazer, goth, industrial, ambient, and hardcore. Last year's self-titled debut -- two tracks, 34 minutes -- caused a great deal of excitement for its serpentine, terrifying mood pieces. They'll be back with a new 12-inch EP, titled After The Water/Then Window, which, according to the Bloodlust newsletter sent out last week, has been sent to the pressing plant. (Bloodlust is the label of Habit/Bloodyminded mainman Mark Solotroff). Any word of a release date, and we pass it on to you. Anatomy of Habit play with Chord and Jon Mueller at The Hideout on Saturday, May 12. Pencil this show in, because it will no doubt be a memorable show.

Arriver "Tsushima" LP release party tonight!

Tonight's Arriver show with Anatomy of Habit and The Swan King marks the official release of their new  "Tsushima" LP on BloodLust!  We hope to see lots of folks at The Hideout in support of the release and the show...  the exception being if you have tickets for Diamanda Galas at the Museum of Contemporary Art... but come out afterwards to catch part of the show and to hear DJs Arman Mabry (Rabid Rabbit) and Trevor De Brauw (Pelican) spin into the wee hours...

The Reader on Arriver LP (2/25 preview)

Arriver, Anatomy of Habit, Swan King

When: Sat., Feb. 25, 9 p.m.
Price: $10
A vibrant and intellectually restless progressive metal band founded in 2004 by brothers Dan and Rob Sullivan, Arriver specializes in producing what are more or less books in musical form. The local four-piece's debut, the 2006 full-length Vanlandingham and Zone, was practically an epic sci-fi novel, complete with elaborate world building—which was allegedly inspired when a piece of voice-recognition software pulled a creepy ghost-in-the-machine routine and spontaneously generated the core text of that world's mythology. Their follow-up, the 2010 EP Simon Mann, was all about a failed 2004 coup in Equatorial Guinea, led by the British mercenary whose name gives the record its title. And this show is a release party for the amazing new Tsushima (Bloodlust!), a retelling of a 1905 naval battle during the Russo-Japanese war that all but destroyed the Russian fleet, which had been weakened by a voyage around Africa. Arriver seem to acknowledge the courage and perseverance involved in such a battle with their eruptions, interludes, and grand pillars of riffage, but their sonic fury rests on an undercurrent of righteous anger provoked by the tragedy and futility of war. It's a testament to the genius of this band that they can turn a subject you might dismiss as interesting only to military-history nerds and war gamers into something that can grab you by the throat—at least if you can use your head and bang it at the same time. —Monica Kendrick Anatomy of Habit and the Swan King open.

We had a great night at The Hideout on Halloween Eve.  Thanks to Indian and Rabid Rabbit for asking us to be a part of the annual Halloween heaviness there.  Thanks to all of our friends who came out to have a good time on Sunday!  After Steven warmed the crowd up a bit with some excellent selections (all night, actually!), we went on in front of a nice, full room.  There was a strong turnout from the noise scene here but you could tell that there was a lot of confusion within the audience, as many people were likely expecting a (doom) metal band.  But as we warmed up, so did the crowd, and within a few minutes, the energy level picked up.  As it was a Halloween celebration, we decided to go as "Early BLOODYMINDED," so we all dug out the leather, I pulled out the huge microphone snake (mid-era, really), and we even asked founding member Megan Emish (also ex-Intrinsic Action) to join us for her second show in 13 or 14 years, the last one being over 5 years ago.  "Mantra" was always her specialty and it was great to hear her screams (unaided by amplification) ripping through the air as we wrapped up our performance.  It was definitely one of my favorite sets in a LONG time, and it oddly enough even seemed to have a sort of story arc to it.  Not just the more typical "on-off-on-off" kind of thing.  Afterwards, I joined Rabid Rabbit on "Suicide Song" (AKA "Gloomy Sunday") from their forthcoming LP on BloodLust!  They sounded fantastic on Sunday... Dark and heavy as hell... And you could really hear all of the elements of their style, running from doom metal to psychedelic to even a heavy shoegazer thing.  Indian capped off the night by just annihilating the place with their caustic, ugly, blackened sound.  They were loud as hell, but their mix was actually better than at last year's show, making each part of their sound stand out, especially the blood-curdling vocals.  Cheers to Joey for the great, vivid, loud sound!
